Tum to Thahre Pardesi fame Altaf Raja in Giridih

Pop, jazz and fusion music have taken over the music industry, but a qawwali stays longer in the listener's memory, said qawwali singer Altaf Raja, who was in Giridih to take part in a programme for Id organised at Jhanda Maidan.

The singer who lent his voice to many Bollywood numbers, including songs for Company, gave a three-hour performance at Giridih last night at the programme organised by Binod Kumar.

"If we want to save our classical music, we should stop sending our children to talent hunt shows. We should let them reyaz (practise) daily for a depth in music. Such shows are shortcuts for instant recognition," said Raja, whose father was a Muslim and mother a Hindu. His gurus, too, hailed from both cultures.

"Music is what connects communities. While I was born to the sound of azaan, I grew up to a variety of cultures and now I try to create harmony through my singing," he said.

During the programme, Raja crooned his famous songs — Tum to Thahre Pardesi, Pehle toh Kabhi Kabhi Gum Tha, Ankh Hi Na Roi and Mere Dil Main Kinta Pyar Hai.
